Ethel Kate Layton (Kitty)
2nd April 1923 - 14th February 2006
82 years old
Lived in Thurcroft & Bramley in Rotherham
Kitty was Mum to 6 children:
Sylvia, Marlene, Janet, Billy, Malcolm & Sandra.
And loving Grandmother to 14.
She was also a loving GREAT grandmother to 9.
And much loved & missed friend to Ron, Eva & Family
My Grandma Passed Away from a stroke.
What can I say about a true lady who I miss so very much?
She was my Mum's (Marlene) mother & she was great to get on with, I don't know anybody who has a bad
word to say about her, when I was little I used to "do" her hair for her!
She loved it being brushed and have her grips put back in! She lost her husband Harry in 1986 so she
had quite a few years on him!
As I got older I began to see her as a friend & not as much as "just my Gran".
When I fell pregnant in 2000, she was over the moon! When I gave birth to my daughter the following
May, my Gran was one of the 1st people we rang to tell! She has 8 other great grand - children with
whom she loved & was proud of each and every one of them.
When my Mum got the phone call saying that my Gran had been rushed to hospital it was like slow -
motion, we was in the town when me, mum & my daughter were going to have a cup of tea & my mum got a
call from her friend Eva saying that Gran had collapsed at home & that Eva's dad, Ron had called Eva
to say that he couldn't get my Gran up off of the floor, so Eva had drove like mad to my Gran's
bungalow & tried her best to wake my Gran up, Ron called an ambulance while Eva performed "CPR"
because my Gran had stopped breathing. She managed to bring her back then the ambulance men had
arrived by then, they took my Gran to the hospital, Eva & Ron stayed at my Gran's, my Mum & my
aunties Janet & Sylvia went up, I went after I dropped my daughter off at my sister's, my cousin
Kerry also came to see her.
When I arrived she was laid on the bed in the A & E department & some how I knew that she wouldn't
be coming out again, seeing my mum crying for her mum was the hardest part of all.
My auntie Janet was with Gran when she passed at 4.50am on Tuesday 14th Feb, Mum rang me at 5 am & a
part of me didn't want to pick the phone up but I did & hearing my mum crying crushed me....
I was in shock & couldn't believe that my Gran was gone.
The Thursday before her funeral I went to see her in the funeral home & she looked so great, like
she was asleep, she had this gorgeous Terracotta suit on & a blue shawl. My mum went afterwards & I
went with her, I stayed outside but I could hear her crying & saying "Oh Mam..." I wish that I could
take her pain away.
She was cremated the following Friday 24th Feb, we played Westlife's "You raise me up". Lots of
people came to pay their respects to a truly wonderful lady & I'm personally very proud to say that
she was MY grand - mother but I'm even more proud to say that she was my friend.
I'll miss her for the rest of my life but I have wonderful memories. Grandma, I love you very much.

We Miss You xx
I picture you walking up the path
and walking through the door
I listen out for your gentle laugh
but i cant hear it anymore
I hold my hands out everyday
Hoping for your gentle touch
But i dont feel your warm hands touch me
Its a feeling i miss so much
I wait for you to wipe my tears
But you want yours wiping too
And everyday still hurts so much
Because my life is missing you
I keep your memory in my soul
It burns so bright each day
And all the things i have in my mind
Theres three words i want to say
I Miss You
